The holy month of Ramadan holds deep significance for Muslims across the globe. It is a time for fasting, prayer, reflection, and, importantly, acts of charity. Ramadan is not just a period of spiritual growth and self-discipline but also an opportunity to come together as a community, supporting one another with kindness and compassion.
One of the core practices during Ramadan is Zakat ul Fitr (also known as Fitrana), a charitable donation of food that must be given before Eid prayer. This essential contribution ensures that everyone, regardless of their circumstances, can join in the celebrations of Eid and share in the joy and blessings of the month.
At ZUN, we are deeply committed to fulfilling this obligation and reaching out to those who need support in our community. With the generous help of our donors—our "Pillars of ZUN"—we continued our annual tradition of distributing ration kits to 100 households this year. These kits, filled with essentials like sugar, tea, oil, and spices, help families break their fast with comfort and warmth.
This year, we also extended our Zakat fund to The YET Islamic Orphanage in Bommasandra, where we’ve had a longstanding relationship. Under the guidance of Mrs. Ghousia Mahmood, the orphanage provides a safe, nurturing environment for children, offering them shelter, education, and the opportunity to grow in their faith. To celebrate Ramadan, we organised a special pizza iftar for the 110 children at the orphanage, along with fresh fruits and dates, kindly donated by the orphanage’s caretakers. Earlier this year, during Bakra Eid, we also used the meat from Qurbani sacrifices donated by our trustees to prepare a delicious biryani meal for the children and their caretakers. It was a joyful moment of sharing, ensuring that everyone had a special meal during this sacred time.
Our ongoing support for The YET Orphanage is more than just about charity; it’s about making a lasting difference in the lives of these children. By continuing to support their education and well-being, we hope to help them achieve their full potential and create a brighter future.
The Zakat fund was also used to provide Sehri meals for 10 days at Al-Hadi Hostel, an all-boys hostel in Yeshwanthpur. The hostel, managed by the local mosque, serves students from surrounding areas who are studying in Bangalore. By providing them with a nourishing meal before dawn, we ensure that they can fast with strength and focus during this blessed month.
None of this would be possible without the collective effort of our team and the unwavering support of our donors. Together, we are able to continue uplifting our community, particularly during significant times like Ramadan and Eid.
As we near the end of Ramadan and prepare to celebrate Eid, let us take a moment to reflect on the importance of sharing. The simple act of giving, whether it’s a meal, a donation, or a gesture of kindness, can have a profound impact on those in need. May this blessed month inspire us all to live with greater generosity, compassion, and unity, not just during Ramadan, but every day of the year.
